Perfumes? Part Deux - Scents can be Dangerous in a Bad Way.

I skimmed through this thread (Perfumes?) and noticed that no one has said this, but it should be said... with love. :-)  There are those of us who are deathly allergic to scent. (My throat closes up and my head clogs up etc.) I can do some fruity smells but not for an extended period of time (like over an hour) or on me.  So go easy on it when you wear it, for our sake. :-)

Also, take into consideration the other scents you have put on your body during prep - shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, soap, make-up etc. The mix of those alone can make me woozy but with a perfume they can kill.  :-0  :-)  Even the scents that permeate your house like Glade Plug Ins, scented candles, popouri or incense can stick to your clothes and body and add to the deadly combo.

I'm a receptionist and I've had to endour people sitting in the reception area who needed to take a bath: either because of BO or because they bathed in their perfum de vie.

Also when you prep think about the scents you are putting on, not just for us weirdos, but for the sake of your own presentation to those who will enjoy your perfume.  There is a good chance that they won't smell the actual perfume because the rest of the scents you used will drown it out, mute it or change it altogether into something icky.

Just a little note for thought. :-)

Since I participated in comments, I've decided I should weigh in on the actual topic you started. Incidentally, it's one I've been thinking of personally of late.

I am light sensitive. Bright lights, and flashing or flickering lights can really bother me. My skin is also sensitive, so I prefer things with fewer additives. I generally choose items in unscented varieties. I dislike the massive proliferation of 'scent' in modern society, and strong perfume smells make me feels sick to my stomach, though I would not call myself 'scent sensitive'.

At the grocery store you can get Febreeze 'Spring and Renewal' scented: basic Febreeze spray, Tide laundry detergent, air effects odor eliminator, and air freshener. I think you can get fabric softener with the same scent. I think it's nuts! Why does there need to be different scents of dishwasher powder detergent?

Anyway, I don't use scented products for myself, though my partner and kids like scented laundry detergent, so I have a 'free' version for my things. I do use a few drops of essential oils in my mixes for cleaning my hair and body, but I believe people have to get quite close to smell them.

I really hate how people who wear too much smell, and I imagine that's how people with 'just a spritz' smell to you. I'd hate that and I sympathize with you. Here in Canada, I believe it is the norm to not be allowed to wear additional scents at work, as in, a normal scented shampoo would be ok, but if someone's perfume bothered someone, I think they'd be asked to discontinue use.

Thank you. You said this so much better than I did. :-)

I can also understand the sensitive skin thing. I grew up with excema. Now its not so bad, but my skin still hates anything foreign like man-made chemicals; I use Avalon Organics body lotion, unscented now. It's fabulous. I also have to wear hypoallergenic make-up or I dry out like a molting snake. It also turns out I have mild rosacea to top it all off. Sheesh.

I truly wish I could wear scents. I love roses and daisies and such. And wearing their scents would so much make me feel more feminine. But I can't. You are lucky that you can stand to let your family use the scented stuff. My mom and I just can't. :-(

I have allergies/asthma to many things -- some of which I live with (my dogs) and medicate myself for.

But, when I didn't take medication and was out and about whether it be work or otherwise, I made sure to have my inhaler, tylenol, and an allergy pill.

It's just my opinion I suppose that people w/challenges in regards to scents, animals, ect -- just need to be prepared and stop expecting people who wear perfume to be more considerate of those who have troubles.

If I'm at work or in a store w/someone who has taken a bath so to speak in their perfume, I simply move away.

I think it's time to tear yourself away from this comm for a minute and rejoin the real world.
